Son élégance résulte de sa couronne arrondie et étalée, mais aussi de sa délicate floraison estivale en grappes blanches légères et parfumées. Lorsque les jeunes rameaux sont meurtris, le bois de la variété Cladrastis kentukea se teinte en jaune. Son nom latin, Cladrastis, vient du grec klados qui signifie rameau, et theraustos, pour fragile.
